Annual Inflation Rate in the National Capital Region grows by 3.9 percent in July 2014

Annual year-on-year inflation in the National Capital Region (NCR) increased to 3.9 percent in July 2014. The reason for the increase was observed in seven commodity divisions namely: food and non-alcoholic beverages; clothing and footwear; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; health; recreation and culture; and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services. Annual inflation rate in the NCR continuously climbed this year from 2.7 in January to 3.9 this July. Inflation rate in June 2014 was recorded at 3.6 compared to 1.6 from the same month of last year. There is an increase of 0.3 percent in the month-on-month inflation in July.


2010 Census of Population and Housing

Population of the City of Manila stands at 1.65 million

Population of the City of Manila increases by 0.44 percent annually

Total 2010 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) revealed that the total population of the City of Manila was at 1,652,171 as of May 1, 2010, representing an increase of 71,089 persons over the May 2000 population. The increase in the population translates to an average annual population growth rate (PGR) of 0.44 percent from 2000 to 2010, higher than the PGR for the period 1990 to 2000.

The City of Manila contributed 13.94 percent to the total population of the National Capital Region (NCR) with 11,855,975 and was second to Quezon City (2,761,720) in cities with million populations in 2010.  The following table presents the total population and average annual population growth rate by census years.

PSA New National Statistician

PSA New National Statistician Appointed

Dr. Lisa Grace S. Bersales, is the new National Statistician and head of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).  Ms. Bersales is the former vice-president for planning and finance of the University of the Philippines (UP) System and erstwhile dean of the UP Diliman School of Statistics. NEDA Secretary Mr. Arsenio M. Balisacan, PSA Board Chairman, led the oath-taking ceremony that was held last April 22, 2014 at the NEDA Central Office in Pasig City.

President Benigno S. Aquino III appointed her on April 21, 2014. The PSA was created by Republic Act 10625 on September 12, 2013. It merges the various statistical offices and bureaus of the different national government agencies under one authority, and is comprised of the former National Statistics Office (NSO), the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS), and the Bureau of Labor and Employment Statistics (BLES).

NCR, First District Manila Celebrates Family Week @ MOA

In support to the Presidential Proclamation 1895 issued on September 30, 2009 which declares the celebration of the Filipino Family Day every fourth Monday of September. NCR I family celebrated the event on September 22, 2011 at Mall of Asia, Pasay City through a “Salo-salo” together at Marina Restaurant after which the district went to SM Mall of Asia IMAX theater and enjoyed watching movie in wide screen. The district spent the rest of the day with leisurely walk and enjoying the breeze of its surroundings. The district’s theme “The Family that Eats Together, Stays and Grows Together” also aimed at encouraging families to bring back the practice of family eating together, one way of strengthening family ties.


2007 Census of Population Results

Population increased to 1,660,714 persons

 The total population of Manila, as of August 1, 2007, was 1,660,714 persons. This represents an increase of 79,632 persons over the total population of 1,581,082 persons in 2000. This increase translated to an annual population growth rate (PGR) of 0.68 percent for the period 2000 to 2007, higher than the PGR of -0.97 percent recorded during the period 1995 to 2000.

Average household size was 4.3 persons. The number of households rose to 382,183 in 2007, or an increase of 48,636 households from the 2000 figure. Likewise, household population increased from 1,569,584 persons in 2000 to 1,650,712 persons in 2007. The average household size in 2007 was 4.3 persons, lower than the average household size of 4.7 persons in 2000.

General Retail Price Index

General Retail Price Index in the NCR (2000=100), July 2011 

• Month-on-Month
          The monthly change of the General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) inched up by 0.1 percent in July from zero growth in June. Increments recorded in the manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials and machinery and transport equipment indexes were higher at 0.1 percent in July from -0.1 percent in June. On the other hand, slower monthly rates were posted in beverages and tobacco at 0.1 percent from 0.3 percent; chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats, 0.1 percent from 0.2 percent and miscellaneous manufactured articles, 0.2 percent from 0.3 percent. The movement of the food index remained at its previous month's rate of 0.1 percent while the rest of the commodity groups have registered either negative rate or a zero growth.

NCR First District - Manila Celebrates the 71st Founding Anniversary

The National Statistics Office marks another milestone as it commemorates its 71st founding anniversary since it was born in the 19th of August  in 1940.  This year, the theme was entitled as "70 Plus 1 na Tayo!"  The NCR, First District - Manila had series of activities in line with the celebration.  

Since the month of August was also the celebration of the Language Month, the district office conducted a mini sports fest dubbed as "Palarong Pinoy" held at the district office parking lot and at the covered court in Barangay San Isidro, Galas, Quezon City on August 16, 17 and 19, 2011.  Not like any other sports activity, the games competed by the staff were old types of games such as jack-stone, chinese garter, siopao, pick-up stick, pitikan ng goma, sipa, limbo rock, batuhang bola , agawan panyo and patintero.  These games were long been forgotten by the present generation due to the existence of electronic games readily available online and the lack of space for playground.

Thus said National Statistics Office (NSO) Administrator Carmelita N. Ericta as she addressed the participants during the 7th National Convention of Solemnizing Officers (NCSO) held last August 2-4, 2011 at the Plaza Del Norte in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. Themed "Quality Civil Registration in Support of National Development Goals", the 7NCSO aimed at providing a venue for sharing of experiences and exchange of ideas on various issues and concerns on implementation of marriage laws and registration procedures.

The NSO officials and employees are aware of the confidentiality provision that envelopes their activities and protects their respondents. Commonwealth Act 591 defines the parameters by which the office works, and provides reassurance that no information relating to the respondent are given out. This in turn raises the chance of obtaining more reliable information, information vital to the workings of society.

The NSO recognizes the changing needs of society, and the avenues of opportunity opened by technology. Evolving technology places the NSO at a distinct advantage, allowing faster and more varied processing, and dissemination to an unparalleled range of audiences. The Office is dedicated to making data relevant and timely, and strives to balance it with confidentiality. To this end, the NSO takes an active and lead role in redefining statistics and its data, in society.

Privacy and Confidentiality Statement

The NSO recognizes the vital role of their respondents information. Primary data gathered by the NSO is held in the strictest confidence and is assured by Section 4, CA 591.

Balancing the policy of confidentiality with the evolving needs of society for valuable information, the NSO generally releases data in the form of summaries. Releases other than those in the form of summaries are considered when mandated by subsequent laws, and always in consideration of the policy of confidentiality.


In any use of NSO data, an acknowledgement of the data source would be greatly appreciated.

The NSO warrants that all material released have undergone the highest quality statistical data collection and processing methods available to it.

NSO data is generally available for free either through conventional data dissemination methods such as press releases, or through other more advanced means, such as its website.
